Our stem cells repair tissue, but they slow down as we age. This review looks at how eating less, known as caloric restriction, can refresh tired stem cells in blood, gut, brain, and muscle. Much of the effect runs through a nutrient-sensing pathway called mTOR, the same one that drugs like rapamycin target.
Clearing Out Aging Cells Made Stem Cell Repair Work Far Better in Mice
Old, worn-out cells (called senescent cells) seem to block the body's natural repair work. In mice with liver damage and forced aging, combining a treatment that clears these cells with stem cell therapy worked far better than either alone. The combo reversed signs of aging and restored repair signals. This is early animal research, not tested in people.

In mice, skin stem cells can hold lifelong "memories" of past inflammation like psoriasis flares. These memories are stored as epigenetic changes. Specific DNA sequences rich in CpG patterns keep the memory accessible through cell divisions. This means once skin has been inflamed, its stem cells stay primed to react faster and stronger to future triggers.
Lab-on-a-Chip Mimics Decades of Human Aging in Just 4 Days
Researchers built a tiny organ-on-a-chip using human stem cells to model how fat tissue and the liver age together. By exposing it to blood serum from older people, the chip reproduced decades' worth of aging hallmarks in just 4 days. These included DNA damage and gene expression shifts seen in actual aged tissues. The system also revealed sex-based differences in aging and how fat aging spills over to affect the liver.
